Eureka! Come strike educational gold in this engaging seriously fun focus on California history. The story of California begins with the Native American Indians who lived here before the first Europeans arrived. We will learn about the Spanish-Mexican settlers, the missions, and the Americans who established California as a state. Along with the Gold Rush, will also study the Asian immigrants and how they supplied a new supply of labor during the building of the transcontinental railroad. Elementary History

In this discussion and activity-based course, students take a global trip around the world through the Middle Ages to the modern age. Through Socratic discussions, games, group and personal research projects, weekly homework assignments, and unit exams, students will learn the ways people thought, worked, played, worshipped, and died from the medieval period through the early modern age.

My class is open for 6-8th grade students. My classes are on a 3-year rotation covering all required middle school social studies: Ancient World History, Medieval World History, and American History. While American History is an 8th grade standard in California, this class is open for all middle schoolers. Grading and expectations are adjusted to the student's age and grade level. If your child is in 6th grade and they continue with PCLC through 8th grade, they will complete all required social studies classes.

Designed for students in 9th grade, this interactive social studies course provides students with a solid foundation from which to study all other social sciences. Students will develop a working knowledge of all political and physical features of geography and will also learn about the people, ethnicities, and cultures in those places. This engaging and life influencing course introduces basic economic concepts and institutions and their application in the American economy. Economics & Personal Finance

Civics is the study of citizenship and government. This one-semester, A-G high school course provides students with a basic understanding of civic life, politics, and government, and a short history of government’s foundation and development in this country. Students learn how power and responsibility are shared and limited by government, the place of law in the American constitutional system, and which rights the American government guarantees its citizens. Students also examine how the world is organized politically and how civic participation in the American political system compares to that in other societies around the world today.

This dynamic class is designed to encourage beginning readers and writers to love great books and enjoy the writing process. Throughout the course, students will learn how to write complete sentences, whole paragraphs, and their own creative stories. Games, art projects, and group work will help lay a foundation for a lifelong love of literature!

Students will average reading one book per week and complete simple homework assignments. The work load is entirely flexible, based on each student’s ability, and the teacher will work closely with parents to provide a personalized program that is challenging, but never overwhelming.

Child must be in the 1-2 grade, and they need to be able to recognize and write their ABCs. They need to be able to focus and engage in a lesson for 1 hour. If anyone younger than 1st grade is interested in this class, they must take a small assessment test before registering.

This course is designed for younger middle school students (6th grade). We will introduce your student to the beauty of our oceans and the organisms that live in them. We will also focus on some local creatures that live right on our beaches, including the California grunion which lays its eggs here in the sand! Some dissections and fun projects are included. Each week will have a live lecture and hands-on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab paperwork, and tests will be completed by the student at home. This course is for Jr High students (ideally 7th) and is an introductory to the life sciences. We will cover cells, genetics, mitosis/meiosis, photosynthesis, protein synthesis, respiration, the 6 kingdoms and human anatomy. Each week will have a live lecture and hands on lab. This a-g level physical science class meets once a week for 90 minutes. The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks / semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. The course introduces concepts in chemistry and physics. Subjects covered will include the scientific method, metrics and conversions, matter, atomic structure and chemical bonding, and properties of matter as well as energy and motion, acceleration and momentum, Newton's laws, and the gas laws. A unit on the electromagnetic spectrum including focused material on sound and light will be covered. A unit of electricity, magnetism, and energy sources will conclude our study. Physical Science

This a-g level biology class meets once a week for 2 hours (1 hour of lecture, 1 hour of lab). The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks / semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, labs, and testing will be completed online at home, with the exception of two in-class practicum exams. The course covers the top concepts in biology, including a brief overview of chemistry in the body, then onto a thorough investigation of cells, protein synthesis, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis. Mendelian genetics is covered with labs focused on how blood types are inherited, followed by a unit on origins. A complete survey of the 3 domains and 6 kingdoms is filled with dissections of various representative specimens and is followed by a unit of ecology. A unit on human anatomy finishes up the course. All lab supplies are provided when students are in person.

This a-g level chemistry class meets once a week for 2.25 hours. The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks / semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, lab reports, and testing will be completed online at home with the exception of two in-class final exams. The course covers the structure of the atom, the periodic table, chemical bonding, molecular structure and reactivity. A unit on moles and stoichiometry is followed by a study of gases, solutions, and acids and bases. Reaction rates and chemical equilibrium will be explored, followed by redox reactions and electrochemistry. Finally, we will explore biochemistry and some organic chemistry. There will be a significant emphasis on laboratory practice, with weekly labs and/or demonstrations, along with computation for quantitative analysis. Weekly homework assignments from the textbook, lab notebooks, and handouts will be completed by the students at home each week. Tests will be sent home with the student to be administered by their parents and returned to class the following week. All lab supplies are provided when students are in person.

Psychology is the study of the human mind and behavior. In this year-long intro course, students will gain insight into the birth of psychology, its major figures, perspectives, and most famous studies. Students will learn to evaluate psychological research, describe the anatomy and function of the brain, apply evidence-based techniques to improve study skills, and explore mental disorders and treatment. This course will also cover topics including memory, learning and cognitive development, motivation, personality theories, lifespan development, and social psychology. In the classroom, students will receive direct instruction and participate in classroom activities and discussions. At home, students will be responsible for weekly reading and assignments including projects and one paper per semester. The unit on mental disorders and treatment is always a student favorite. The main goal of this course is for students to develop the ability to analyze and evaluate the views they come across and to strengthen their own ability to take a stand. Students will learn to exercise various strategies for making and analyzing arguments, evaluating evidence, spotting and avoiding faulty reasoning. Course material and class discussions will often be applied to real-world issues. It takes practice to master the skills involved in critical thinking. For most class sessions, students will be expected to do some reading, and then do some homework problems from the textbook. As long as students keep up with the reading and homework, the course should not be overly demanding. In fact, be prepared to have fun with this fascinating material! Forensic Science

Come learn skills you may or may not need someday and have fun empowering yourself in the process. Scenario one: there has been a natural disaster. Your home has no access to water, electricity, or gas. Learn skills to make clean water, create warmth, find food and medical supplies and safely dispose of waste. Scenario two: you're camping in the wilderness and get separated from your group. Now you are lost. How will you survive until help arrives? Learn clean water preparation, fire and shelter making, and identification of edible plants. Essential fishing and trapping will also be covered. A final field trip to Silverado Canyon for a day of survival training with an expert from Thomas Coyne Survival Schools is included in the cost of the class ($120 value). Field trip will be Sunday, April 13th, 2025.

Setting goals and priorities, learning to organize workloads and time, developing strategies for reading textbooks, writing papers, taking more effective notes, and how to study more efficiently for tests will be the focus of this class. Students will be guided to use these skills with the courses they are taking this semester and through in-class exercises and practice. This class can also help students with poor organizational skills.

Study Skills

In this workshop-style course, students are exposed to the art and craft of creative writing with both academic intention and full artistic expression. Modeled after university level introductory courses in creative writing, students study the craft elements of historic and modern poetry, spoken word, short story fiction, revision tactics, alternative storytelling platforms, and the various available modes of publishing in the literary marketplace. Students are instructed to engage in regular writing exercises designed to draw out and hone the creative process while generating raw material for creative projects assigned throughout the year, including: metered and rhyming poems, free verse poems, spoken word, stream of consciousness writing, short story, personal reflection writing, and feedback letters. Students are guided through each stage of writing fiction, from drafting all the way to revision and publishing with a heavy emphasis on how to effectively use the elements of character, plot, setting, and point of view. Presentations of the students’ creations will be followed by lessons in the important life skill of giving respectful, helpful, and constructive feedback, as well as how to receive comments with grace and humility in their pursuit of growth as writers.

Creative Writing- Poetry & Fiction

In this home economics course, students learn about the many things it takes to run a household and live responsibly! This course covers topics such as cooking, baking, nutrition, fixing odds and ends around the home, sewing, health, hygiene, finance, and child development. This allows students to sample the many facets of living on their own, as well as ways to be frugal by learning helpful skills.

Home Economics

This entry-level course is designed to introduce high school students to general design and shop practices. Projects are designed to give students as much experience as possible through using different machines and tools, and instruction covers as many aspects of design, building, and woodworking as possible. Students expand their knowledge and experience through various hands-on projects, lessons, and mechanical vocabulary and are expected to learn shop safety and the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery. Through lectures and demonstrations, the instructor introduces challenges such as designing projects with a budget, material selection, as well as project building, assembly, and finishing.

The eclectic assortment of projects will include creating macrame’, bead-weaving, reductive mono-prints, origami tessellations and more. In planning additional projects, student interests and skill levels will be taken into consideration. We will strive for quality work in this relaxed and fun atmosphere. Finished work may be worthy of gift-giving (but just might turn out to be too cool to part with).
