Students in this course will both learn and love history! Through a classical sweep of human history, 3rd -5th graders will explore ancient civilizations who have left their mark on our world. Understanding chronological relationships and how local, regional, and national traditions have shaped humanity. Cultures from the past are made alive through activities, games, re-enactments, and “spontaneous” classroom adventures plus the manageable weekly homework assignments reinforce learning.

Elementary History

This engaging course covers a comprehensive overview of the history, culture, geography, politics, and religions of ancient civilizations. The time period studied spans from approximately 8000 BC to 500 AD. Students develop higher levels of critical thinking by considering why civilizations developed where and when they did and the reasons they delcined. Students analyze interactions among the various cultures, while emphasizing their enduring contributions. Connections will be made between the contemporary and ancient worlds that will build a foundation for high-school level social studies and beyond.

My class is open for 6-8th grade students. My classes are on a 3-year rotation covering all required middle school social studies: Ancient World History, Medieval World History, and American History. While American History is an 8th grade standard in California, this class is open for all middle schoolers. Grading and expectations are adjusted to the student's age and grade level. If your child is in 6th grade and they continue with PCLC through 8th grade, they will complete all required social studies classes.

Middle School History

Designed for students in 9th grade, this interactive social studies course provides students with a solid foundation from which to study all other social sciences. Students will develop a working knowledge of all political and physical features of geography and will also learn about the people and cultures in those places. Subjects like trade and commerce, weather and natural disasters, religion, culture, politics, and socioeconomic influences all contribute to an understanding of how a region’s landscape uniquely affects how its cultures develop. This engaging and life influencing course introduces basic economic concepts and institutions and their application in the American economy. Students will come to understand the economic decision making process of consumers, business firms, and the government. Civics is the study of citizenship and government. This one-semester, A-G high school course provides students with a basic understanding of civic life, politics, and government, and a short history of government’s foundation and development in this country. Students learn how power and responsibility are shared and limited by government, the place of law in the American constitutional system, and which rights the American government guarantees its citizens. Students also examine how the world is organized politically and how civic participation in the American political system compares to that in other societies around the world today.

High School ASL

This is a one year advanced course in American Sign Language Level 3. Throughout this course, students will master comprehension, expression, language fluency and proficiency. Extensive study through all letters in the Gallaudet ASL dictionary will ensure in students a strong vocabulary recognition and use. Students will further encounter and explore Deaf culture and history, gaining advanced cultural awareness. Students will work towards mastering confidence in active communication, and conversational fluidity. Students will understand the use of ASL in wide variety of settings from casual to professional. Students will be educated and evaluated on grammar use and sentence structure, comprehension and receptive skills, vocabulary, authentic signed presentations, as well as cultural assignments and discussions.

Literature / Grammar

This dynamic class is designed to encourage beginning readers and writers to love great books and enjoy the writing process. Throughout the course, students will learn how to write complete sentences, whole paragraphs, and their own creative stories. Games, art projects, and group work will help lay a foundation for a lifelong love of literature!

Students will average reading one book per week and complete simple homework assignments. The work load is entirely flexible, based on each student’s ability, and the teacher will work closely with parents to provide a personalized program that is challenging, but never overwhelming.

Child must be in the 1-2 grade, and they need to be able to recognize and write their ABCs. They need to be able to focus and engage in a lesson for 1 hour. If anyone younger than 1st grade is interested in this class, they must take a small assessment test before registering.

Good literature takes us to different times and places, introduces us to fantastic characters, and teaches us to imagine and tell good stories. Elementary Science

This course is designed for younger middle school students (6th grade). We will introduce your student to the beauty of our oceans and the organisms that live in them. We will also focus on some local creatures that live right on our beaches, including the California grunion which lays its eggs here in the sand! Some dissections and fun projects are included. Each week will have a live lecture and hands-on lab. Textbook reading, homework questions, lab paperwork, and tests will be completed by the student at home. A Shark Report will be completed by each student at the end of 2nd semester. Two (optional) field trips will be offered during the year. All lab supplies are provided when students are in person.

Marine Science

This course is for Jr High students (ideally 7th) and is an introductory to the life sciences. This course is for older middle school students (8th grade). Earth & Space Science

This a-g level physical science class meets once a week for 90 minutes. The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks / semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, lab homework, and testing will be completed online at home. There will be 1 self-directed project, 1 science fair project, and 1 research paper in addition to the regular class work. The course introduces concepts in chemistry and physics. Subjects covered will include the scientific method, metrics and conversions, matter, atomic structure and chemical bonding, and properties of matter as well as energy and motion, acceleration and momentum, Newton's laws, and the gas laws. A unit on the electromagnetic spectrum including focused material on sound and light will be covered. A unit of electricity, magnetism, and energy sources will conclude our study. All lab supplies are provided when students are in person.

Physical Science

This a-g level biology class meets once a week for 2 hours (1 hour of lecture, 1 hour of lab). The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks / semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, labs, and testing will be completed online at home, with the exception of two in-class practicum exams. The course covers the top concepts in biology, including a brief overview of chemistry in the body, then onto a thorough investigation of cells, protein synthesis, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis. Mendelian genetics is covered with labs focused on how blood types are inherited, followed by a unit on origins. A complete survey of the 3 domains and 6 kingdoms is filled with dissections of various representative specimens and is followed by a unit of ecology. A unit on human anatomy finishes up the course. All lab supplies are provided when students are in person.

Biology

This a-g level chemistry class meets once a week for 2.25 hours. The class meets for 30 weeks per year (15 weeks / semester). Students will have weekly live lectures and hands-on labs. Reading, lab reports, and testing will be completed online at home with the exception of two in-class final exams. The course covers the structure of the atom, the periodic table, chemical bonding, molecular structure and reactivity. A unit on moles and stoichiometry is followed by a study of gases, solutions, and acids and bases. Reaction rates and chemical equilibrium will be explored, followed by redox reactions and electrochemistry. Finally, we will explore biochemistry and some organic chemistry. There will be a significant emphasis on laboratory practice, with weekly labs and/or demonstrations, along with computation for quantitative analysis. Weekly homework assignments from the textbook, lab notebooks, and handouts will be completed by the students at home each week. Tests will be sent home with the student to be administered by their parents and returned to class the following week. All lab supplies are provided when students are in person.

Chemistry

This health course will cover a variety of health-related topics that will engage students with material through in-class lecture, at-home reading, discussion, videos, activities, and labs. This course will cover both personal and community health, including nutrition, stress-management, exercise, mental and emotional health, reproduction, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, CPR, and first aid. The course will have at least one guest presentation from a health professional. Although this class is a “non-a-g” elective for one semester only, health education is a high school graduation requirement in many districts in California. Forensic Science Elective (9-12th grades) will consist of weekly lectures and labs. Students will study the science of crime scene investigation. Topics included: scene of the crime, evidence, blood splatter patterns, blood factors, forgery, autopsy, forensic entomology, botany and odontology. This course will include a focus on careers related to crime scene investigation. Class concludes with final practicum of a mock crime scene. Whether you have a reluctant artist or a budding Picasso, this class will give your child the knowledge and confidence to tackle any artistic endeavor. This class will teach a combination of fine art techniques, creative expressionism, and crafting skills. We will use a variety of mediums: acrylic, oil, watercolor, oil pastels, markers, color pencil, charcoal, pencil, and sharpie. There will also  be a variety of canvases used: cloth, paper, glass, metal, wood, concrete, paper mache.

Fundamentals of drawing is a class designed specifically to teach students the most foundational principles in all of art. If an artist learns to draw with accurate perspective and proportion, they are freed up to explore any other medium of art. Rock band is a class designed specifically to teach students about being in a band. All students will need to already play at least one instrument. Through the year long program, each student will be put on different instruments in different bands. The goal of Music Production and Recording is to turn a simple idea or unfinished music project into a radio-ready recording. The STEM acronym stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This course is intended to integrate the STEM fields through project- based learning. MS Study Skills

The main goal of this course is for students to develop the ability to analyze and evaluate the views they come across and to strengthen their own ability to take a stand. Students will learn to exercise various strategies for making and analyzing arguments, evaluating evidence, spotting and avoiding faulty reasoning. Course material and class discussions will often be applied to real-world issues.

It takes practice to master the skills involved in critical thinking. For most class sessions, students will be expected to do some reading, and then do some homework problems from the textbook. As long as students keep up with the reading and homework, the course should not be overly demanding. In fact, be prepared to have fun with this fascinating material!

In this semester class, students will learn a multitude of skills to help them take control of their studying and class workload so that they can be more successful students. Setting goals and priorities, learning to organize workloads and time, developing strategies for reading textbooks, writing papers, taking more effective notes, and how to study more efficiently for tests will be the focus of this class. Students will be guided to use these skills with the courses they are taking this semester and through in-class exercises and practice. Career Planning & Life Skills

Child development covers conception to birth as well as all the ages and stages in life from birth to death. Students will have hands on experience with pregnancy simulator, (egg project), baby handling and care, appropriate care from infancy to middle school and beyond This is a largely project-based class with labs and demonstrations in child care. Field work includes working with the preschool on site. CPR and FIRST Aid training will be made available for an additional fee on a Saturday TBD with a certified instructor.

Child Development

Digital Photography is a course that will train students in the field of digital photography. Students will learn skills to compose images related to the specific field of photography such as product, still life, portraiture, landscape and architecture, abstract and action. Students work to refine their photographic skills in relation to image analysis, composition elements, exposure and research in careers within photography. Upon successful completion students will develop a portfolio that is designed to showcase an growth in the knowledge of the technical skills relating to shutter speeds, aperture settings, depth of field, and studio/ natural lighting. In addition, students will work on projects designed to mimic those that they would receive in a real world application. Students will research and learn about a number of photographers as well as the history of photography and the development of the camera itself. Semester 1 will focus on the history, development, of photography and the camera, various photographer and the theory/styles of photography. Semester 2 will focus on putting in to application and practice of how to create in camera and edit what was learned in theory in first semester and working in Lightroom.

This entry-level course is designed to introduce high school students to general design and shop practices. Projects are designed to give students as much experience as possible through using different machines and tools, and instruction covers as many aspects of design, building, and woodworking as possible. Students expand their knowledge and experience through various hands-on projects, lessons, and mechanical vocabulary and are expected to learn shop safety and the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery. Through lectures and demonstrations, the instructor introduces challenges such as designing projects with a budget, material selection, as well as project building, assembly, and finishing.

In this 8 week workshop students will explore the history and evolution of the American comic book superheroes that brought us the Marvel universe we know today as the MCU. We will explore early history of notable characters and their creators, following the comic book culture into the modern era and exploring these characters in the creation of TV shows and movies.  Students will gain a greater appreciation of not only the original artist and history, but appreciation of the filmmaking, modern portrayal of these characters and the cultural impact. Through film and story review students will also learn to note themes, analyze story progression, analyze characters and understand character development. In addition to lectures, class time will include ample discussion time for students to share their own thoughts and opinions, providing a space for community building through common interest.  Students will leave with a deeper knowledge of Marvel history and their created worlds and a new like-minded community network.
